THE THERAPEUTIC HEALING PROPERTIES OF VITAMIN C

THE THERAPEUTIC HEALING PROPERTIES OF VITAMIN C
Researched
Kenn Wingle

In 1928, Dr. Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, biochemist, isolated a substance from citrus fruits
and cabbages that looked like ordinary granulated sugar. “Hexuronic acid” became
“ascorbic acid.” If a person had to take only one vitamin, it should be vitamin C. It is water
soluble and it covers for the loss of other vitamins on a short range basis. Though most living
organisms must manufacture their own vitamin C, humans and other primates must obtain it
from food or die of scurvy. In nearly all mammals vitamin C is produced in the liver from the
blood sugar, glucose. But humans, monkeys, guinea pigs, Indian fruit-eating bats, and red-vented
bulbul birds lack the enzyme which enables the liver to synthesize ascorbic acid from closely
related common carbohydrate glucose sugar. Ascorbic acid is produced by enzymes from
glucose sugar in all plants and nearly all animals. The function of vitamin C in the body is not
fully understood. Vitamin C concentrates in the organs and tissues of high
metabolic activity: the adrenal and pituitary glands, the brain, eyes, ovaries and other vital tissues.

There is no set amount of vitamin C appropriate for everybody at all times. Needs
vary from day to day, depending on the individuals amount of stress. X-Rays, smoking,
heavy metal poisoning, air exposure, etc. all deplete a persons vitamin C reserves. The
late W.J. McCormick, M.D., of Toronto, said that of approximately 6000 patients, he
never found a smoker with a normal level of vitamin C.

Vitamin C is present in very high concentrations in the adrenal glands. The roster of vitamin C achievements
sounds like science fiction, but it isn’t. The following list is just a small sample of it’s extended applications.
cholesterol, (high) infections, fever , diarrhea, allergies, ulcers, arthritis
calcium deposits, poor iron absorption, gastrointestinal disorders,
barbiturate shock, poisonous snake and insect bites, healing from surgery,
glaucoma, heat stroke, low back pain , slipped disc, lead poisoning,
cadmium poisoning, liver disease, wound healing , atherosclerosis,
cardiovascular problems, lockjaw, nasal, gum bleeding, childhood diseases,
aging,  adrenal exhaustion, stress, hay fever,  poison oak & ivy,
mononucleosis,  hepatitis, respiratory problems, prickley heat rash,
People who have died of infections have been found, on autopsy, to have no
vitamin C at all in their bloodstream
. The miracles that vitamin C can accomplish are not
done with drop-in-the bucket dosage, but in massive amounts and there are definite
times for that application as we shall see.

NATURAL SOURCES OF VITAMIN C

Penny for penny and milligram for milligram–oranges
and orange juice are an awful source of vitamin C. If you want larger
amounts of vitamin C at lower cost than orange juice, try any of the
following: broccoli, Brussels sprouts, collards, turnip greens, mustard
greens and red cabbage. Hot peppers have 400% more vitamin C than orange juice.
Besides--orange juice(and other fruit juices) contains  malonic
acid which is a highly toxic compound not listed in the ingredients.
Tomatoes, spinach, asparagus, liver and ham are excellent
sources of  C. Even the  baked potato (with skin) contains a nice
shot of C. Note: make sure your eating only organic produced and preferably locally grown
because produce tested throughout several states at the supermarkets showed that the average
produce is contaminated with pesticides ranging from 9-14!

Most Americans think that they can take a few vitamin C tablets (ascorbic acid)
and get their daily requirement of vitamin C–this is not the case at all. Vitamin C is a
complex of nutritional molecules, only one of which is ascorbic acid. Real Vitamin
C must be natural. Do not mistake the word natural ‘supplement manufacturers”
use of the same word. In their terms it means 95% ascorbic acid with a pinch of rose
hips thrown in the batch. A scam for the public to watch out for! Natural vitamin C
must come in the nutritional complexes made from food (plant and animal) in their multimolecular
design with all attached nutrients and synergists intact. Today the term vitamin
C and ascorbic acid are used interchangeably yet they are distinct and very different
entities. Ascorbic acid is only the preservative portion of the nutritional complex, the rutin, bioflavonoids, organic copper, manganese, and a host of other phytochemicals including enzymes, trace mineral activators and more are more valuable than just isolating ascorbic acid. Each of these compounds works synergistically with one another.

Ascorbic acid alone serves only as an antioxidant. Although supplement
manufacturers would have you believe that antioxidants are priceless,
powerful nutrients that only enhance health, this is not always true. Too
much antioxidant activity inhibits the body’s normal digestion and disposal
of waste tissues. Perhaps this is one of the reasons ascorbic acid has been
shown recently to contribute to the development of coronary heart disease.
Or perhaps ascorbic acid can induce deficiencies of copper by scouring the
body to match up with it’s naturally-occurring counterparts (like organic
copper) in order to be utilized. Copper is an integral part of strong blood
vessels and a deficiency of copper has been linked to blood vessel problems,
including aneursms.  A synthetic diet causes disease and synthetic nutrients
do not perform as advertised.

SURGERY PREVENTATIVE

Dr. James Greenwood, Jr., professor of neurosurgery at Baylor University College
of Medicine, reported in 1964 that vitamin C is helpful in treating lower back pain and it’s
use often prevents the necessity of spinal disc surgery . He recommended the use of 500mg,
increasing to 1000mg per day if there was any discomfort or if strenuous work or exercise was anticipated.
Runners should use this recommended amount to maintain spinal disc integrity to endure
the pounding stress. In many cases, patients of  Dr. Greenwood’s program completely
avoided resorting to back surgery for their chronic pain. When the injury is severe, a
larger dose of 2 grams can be taken safely, advises Dr. Greenwood. It is one of the most
necessary nutrients for strong ligaments, joints and spinal discs. Vitamin C eases pain,
speeds healing and banishes tenderness caused by improper use of muscles. It also prevents
deterioration of the spinal disc that often occurs when nutrition is inadequate.

CHOLESTEROL

Cholesterol has become a scare word and the mass media is constantly shoving
this idea across their food commercials but they are attacking the wrong enemy.
They do not distinguish between (1) Dietary cholesterol and blood cholesterol.
Blood cholesterol and cholesterol deposits in damaged walls of arteries and  the
favorable and unfavorable carriers of cholesterol, HDL and LDL. None of the three
is necessarily related. Yet ascorbate seems to play a role is reducing the damaging
effects of cholesterol in all three cases. The higher the vitamin C concentration, the
lower the cholesterol in the blood and liver.

Dr. Emil Ginter reported in 1973 that ascorbate is necessary for the conversion of
cholesterol into acids excreted in the bile. And the level set by the RDA would not be able to
remove excess cholesterol from the body by way of bile acids.  A lack of vitamin C is always correlated
with damaged blood vessels. Dr. G.C.. Willis found that hardening of the arteries was reversed in guinea pigs with sufficient ascorbate and in some cases damaged blood vessels completely healed. Willis also studied
human aortas at autopsy and found that the lowest amounts of vitamin C measurable
in the vessels were correlated with the worst damage to the vessels. The higher the
vitamin C, the higher the HDL cholesterol.

In 1977, Dr. C. J. Bates and associates reported in Lancet that high density lipoprotein, which helps transport cholesterol out of tissues, is associated with the presence of high levels of ascorbate. I remember  reading of a study done in England years back in which 3000 people who had heart attacks were studied for one
single factor in which they all had in common. I believe her name was Constance Spittle--a nurse
from England. She discovered that all 3000 had sub clinical scurvy–that is, almost no vitamin C in their blood at all. The general conclusion that atherosclerosis is an ascorbate-deficiency and not a disease at all has more logic to it than the continuing warnings from junk science about the dangers of animal fat in the diet.

You can see how misguided science can be when it attacks the wrong culprit. Cholesterol
has been given the bad rap these days but rather it is the regulating mechanism (ascorbate) that is
missing from the diet. Besides if hardening of the arteries was caused by cholesterol why do we only have
hardening of the arteries but not hardening of the veins? Ponder that one a while!

Constance  Spittle observed that even a high-cholesterol diet was accompanied
by a drop in serum cholesterol when the diet included a large amount of fresh fruit and
vegetables. Also, cooking the vegetables, which destroys vitamin C, led to an increase in
serum cholesterol. One thing is obvious from the foregoing facts and that is this: We are living in
the “dark ages” of medicine in spite of all the sophisticated gadgetry we use. It is astounding that
billions of dollars are funded and continue to pour into other aspects of heart disease while little
attention is paid to vitamin C and phytonutrients. Makes you wonder whose looking for the cure if they are looking for one at all. This is what throws a monkey wrench in the Framingham study–none of the
subjects in that massive test weren't even asked about their intake of ascorbate or of foods rich in
vitamin C.

ANTICANCER PREVENTATIVE

Workers at the National Cancer Institute have shown that 5-10 grams of vitamin
C (ascorbic acid) per day by mouth doubles or triples the rate at which lymphocytes,
our bodies infection fighters, are produced. Lymphocytes also destroy cancer cells. People
who are well nourished with vitamin C are less likely to get cancer of the esophagus,
stomach, bladder, and other areas of the body.   A cancerous cell makes more of two
deadly enzymes–hyaluronidase and collagenase–than a normal cell. Both of these enzymes
attack and destroy collagen. An increase in Vitamin C fights these toxic enzymes and
disarms them and further prevents the weakening of the intercellular “glue” by causing
collagen bonds to flourish. Vitamin C helps the body to produce protective amounts
of special anytibody molecules which strengthen the entire immune system.

LEUKEMIA

Surprisingly enough, many of the symptoms of scurvy are identical to the symptoms
of that cancer like infection of the white blood cells, leukemia. Is this just a coincidence?
No, says one expert, Solomon Garb, M.D., of the University of Missouri. Leukemia victims,
just like those who suffer from scurvy, may show signs of bleeding, skeletal changes, and
increased susceptibility to infection. He suggests that “there is a possibility that some of
the more distressing and dangerous symptoms of leukemia may be due to a relative deficiency
of ascorbic acid.”. Dr. garb is not saying that vitamin C deficiency causes leukemia but
rather leukemia is a condition under which the body’s supply the vitamin C is greatly
depleted, and which continues to use enormous amounts of the vitamin. As a result,
scurvylike symptoms appear. Leukemia is an acute and chronic disease characterized by
an abnormal increase in the number of leukocytes (white blood cells)in the tissues
and blood. The bone marrow becomes infected, abnormal cells proliferate and at later
stages may actually displace normal white cells. The diseased leukocytes consume
everything in their path until the victim dies. Nasty to say the least!

Vitamin C has been shown to effectively reduce the horrible symptoms of this disease.
When the white blood cells of a leukemia victim are saturated with vitamin C–the rampant
proliferation process may be interrupted. Research has shown that megadoses of vitamin
C can even eliminate abnormal cells from their bodies. According the Dr. Garb, 5-15
grams of vitamin C daily, administered in 500 milligram doses at two-hour intervals,
produces a beneficial saturation effect that insures the total cell nourishment of the
leukemia victim. He has found that smaller doses at frequent intervals are particularly
necessary for the victim who is already suffering from hemorrhages, one of the scurvy like
symptoms of gross vitamin C deficiency. After tissue saturation is reached, the patient notices
remission from the symptoms.

MEGA DOSES OF VITAMIN C

Any form of stress results in a sudden drop in the body’s vitamin C level. One of the
most important uses for vitamin C is in the synthesis and maintenance of collagen. A protein
-like cement that holds the body’s tissues and organs together. Without collagen the entire
body would simple dissolve away. Scurvy is the example of the gradual deterioration of
collagen–the collapsing of the body’s elastic integrity and the speeding up of the aging
process. Vitamin C acts in the body also as a potent detoxifier. It negates the effects of
heavy metals such as lead, mercury, arsenic, carbon monoxide and many carcinogens.
It also increases the therapeutic effects of different drugs and medicines such as aspirin
and insulin while at the same time reducing their toxic side effects. In large doses , vitamin
C has antiseptic and bacteriological qualities. In mega doses (10-1000 g,) it even kills
viruses like polio.

Mental symptoms of vitamin C deficiency are fatigue, listlessness, lassitude, confusion
and depression. Confusional states in the elderly, often mistakenly considered senility,
may be due to vitamin C deficiency and, if so, will clear with 1g (1000mg) daily for
3 weeks. Vitamin C in doses of 1-2 grams at a time works as a tranquilizer and because of
it’s sedative effect, similar doses help the insomniac fall asleep. The influence of vitamin C
on the mental state is quite remarkable. Because of the body’s homeostatic mechanism,
a person can increase his intake of vitamin C 10,000 times over and only double the level
of vitamin C in the brain.   But that doubling may effect the mental well-being tremendously.
Some voyagers in cosmic consciousness claim megadoses of vitamin C are superior to
psychedelics, meditation, and EST for achieving a state of bliss. Alright you hippies calm down!

Vitamin C,  along with niacin, has been used for “coming down” from bad LSD trips.
Fever, overactive thyroid, or stress of any kind burns up vitamin C. Megadoses
of 3-30g are helpful in severe mental illness by converting a brain poison (adrenochrome
to leucoadrenochrome) into a non toxic substance. Megadoses have been used successfully
to combat schizophrenia and drug addiction. Schizophrenics need much more vitamin C
than normal people. Vandercamp, in 1966 found that schizophrenics required doses from
10-30 g of vitamin C before they began excreting traces of it in their urine, indicating they
had received enough of the vitamin to saturate their tissues. This was 10 times the normal
amount of a control group of normal subjects required. Megadoses of vitamin C are very
useful in treating heroin addiction. Thirty to fifty grams daily in divided doses by mouth
every waking hour provide addicts a smooth symptom-free withdrawal from the narcotic,
reported Drs. Alfred Libby and Irwin Stone.  Dr. Fred Klenner of North Carolina was perhaps
one of the earliest physicians to have dramatic success treating his patients with vitamin C.

He used massive amounts, usually by injection for truly serious diseases, including polio.
He tells of an 18-month-old girl who had been paralyzed by polio and had become
unconscious after a convulsion; she appeared to be dead, there being no heart sounds or
pulse. He injected 6,000 mg. of vitamin C into her blood, and 4 hours later she was cheerful
and alert, though paralyzed on one side. A second injection returned her to normal. All
paralysis had disappeared.  Dr. Klenner, reported that he could clear any viral illness within 48
hours with enough vitamin C (up to 100g a day) and has an impressive track record to prove it.
He had discovered decades ago what doctors today do not know or taught in medical school–that
massive doses of vitamin C can abort virus pneumonia, and save patients from fatal encephalitis
related to stubborn head and chest colds. He said that it also neutralizes, possible controls, virus
production. He adds “In treatment of burns, ascorbic acid in sufficient amounts is truly
a miraculous substance.” he recommends one of two gm. per day (1,000-2,000 mg) for
swift healing. He finds it has primary and lasting effects in pregnancy, too.

Dr. Klenner also tells of a dramatic story of a man who came to him with chest pains,
barely able to breathe. He claimed that something had “stung” him. Dr. Klenner immediately
injected 12,000 mg. of ascorbic acid which neutralized the poison. Dr. Klenner sent the
man home to search for the culprit that had stung him, and he returned with a puss caterpillar
which had caused over 40 welts on his skin. Dr. Klenner said: “Except for vitamin C, this
man would have died from shock and asphyxiation”  Dr. Klenner even stated that the bite of a black
widow spider has also yielded to vitamin C
. Another startling case involved
a 4 year old girl who received a snake bite on her leg. When she was brought to Dr. Klenner’s
office, she was crying from pain and vomiting. While Dr. Klenner waited 25 minutes for
an antivenom skin test reaction, he gave her an injection of 4,000 mg. of vitamin C. Before
the antivenom had even been been administered, the child had stopped crying and vomiting and
was laughing and drinking a glass of orange juice. She said, “Come on, Daddy, lets go
home. I’m alright now.” I think these doses should be used on "Lyme" disease patients.

Dr. Klenner has pioneered the megascorbic acid theory on a wide variety of
diseases. He has obtained fantastically successful results using up to 100gm.or more
of ascorbate a day both orally and intravenously. He recommends to his adult patients
the continuous daily intake of 10gm. or 10,000mg. For children he prescribes 1gm. of
ascorbic acid a day for each year of age up to 10 and then 10gm (10,000 mg.) Daily
hearafter. He reports unusual continuous good health and freedom from disease in
his patients and the diseases we are talking about include hepatitis, herpes, measles
and chicken pox, rubella, bacterial infections(TB, pneumonia and whooping cough), cancer
and leukemia, stokes, arthritis, rheumatism, asthma, hay fever, effects of smoking,
ulcers, diabetes and hypoglycemia, mental illness, poisons, toxins, bone fractures and
shock.

Allergies thrive in a vitamin C deficient environment. Many physicians have reported
that their patients have recovered from allergy rapidly when given large amounts of vitamin C
(330-3,000 mg.) If you could look at your hand in the dark, using a technique called “black
light” illumination you would be able to see the condition of the tissues inside your body.
If you are deficient in vitamin C, this membrane will appear as watery. But if your
level of C is good, the tissues will be well knit, with a mucilaginous substance called
collagen. I don’t have the space to exhibit the testing done by Emil Ginter, M.D., of
Czechoslovakia and others who have shown that vitamin C is concentrated in the lens of the
human eye and that adequate levels of can prevent certain types of cataracts. Also a lack of
Vitamin C is directly implicated in the formation of gall stones. The need for vitamin C
increases with age and losses of ascorbic acid are high in foods cooked in aluminum pans. Dr.
Therese Terrione, a French Researcher was the first to discover that vitamin C can cover at least
for a time, the lack of B and other vitamins. She says: “Vitamin C plays a protective role against
deficiencies of other vitamins”

Animals that manufacture their own vitamin C produce proportionally high doses. A 150-lb. goat,
for example, produces 13 grams a day. Large doses of vitamin C often act as a diuretic, causing
excessive urination, corresponding dehydration, and extreme thirst. These symptoms are largely
prevented if calcium is taken with the vitamin. The body is quite strange in that some people
thrive on vitamin C injections and yet breaks out in a rash by eating any kind of fruit.
The reason that such large amounts are sometimes necessary is because of a persons diet
containing multiple deficiencies of vitamins and minerals as the average American diet. The
remedial dosage then adds up may times. The body requires it and it must be there for proper
maintenance and the best food in the best quantities cannot make up for years of starvation. All
food deficiencies are multiple deficiencies, so multiple concentrations are used.

Physicians who specialize in the field of vitamin therapy find that when therapeutic or remedial help
is necessary, the principle of mass action of nutricauticals is the most effective way to penetrate the blood stream and tissues in order to remedy serious deficiencies. Dr. Cathcart has treated more than 9000 patients with megadoses of ascorbic acid for such diseases as influenza, viral pneumonia, mononucleosis, mumps, rubella, etc. and he has not had to hospitalize a single patient due to an infectious disease. There is a tolerance level which shows that the more vitamin C you can tolerate–the more you need. Dr. H. Van der Kamp showed that chronic schizophrenic patients required 40,000 mg.(40 grams) of vitamin C a day before they eliminated even a trace in their urine. We must be on our guard for publicized
scare stories put out by the FDA who doesn’t know what it’s talking about not care
how they distort the truth. This happened back when Linus Pauling took the drug industry
to task for making useless cold remedies instead of promoting a simple, inexpensive vitamin
C. They even seized sodium ascorbate (not ascorbic acid) in some health stores. Their
conduct is at times abominable in that they would rather see expensive poisonous drugs
forced on the public instead of a cheap non-toxic remedy. I call them corrupt bone heads!

Arend Bouhuys, M.D., of the Yale University School of Medicine, showed that vitamin C in
doses of 1-2 grams daily can save you respiratory miseries. When researchers followed
this regimen they reported a marked improvement in nasal passage discomfort and throat
during hay fever season. Mega-ascorbic acid therapy has been used successfully to treat
cataracts by clearing the optic nerve components, the blood vessels of the retina and
nourishes the eyes. Kidney stones can also be prevented as a direct result of taking
vitamin C and keeping you body fluid PH in the alkaline range. In dramatic tests, W.J.
McCormick, M.D., cleared up kidney stone conditions in a short period without using drugs.
Dr. McCormick demonstrated that taking amounts of 500-2000 milligrams of vitamin C produced a
urine clear of organic sediment symptomatic of kidney stones in a manner of hours. Pretty remarkable! As Darth Vader would say: 'MOST IMPRESSIVE"

It has been reported that vitamin C supplements, coupled with calcium, may
cause calcium oxalate kidney stones in women. The trick is to take magnesium as
well and that risk is eliminated. Dr. Michael Lesser, M.D. has conducted a poll of
over a hundred physicians practicing vitamin therapy, and none have seen a case where
vitamin C caused kidney stones. The rumor appears to be a myth. Vitamin C is
extremely   safe . In an indirect way, vitamin C has been responsible for the establishment of the
Orthomolecular Medical Society which has gained momentum in this country. Few know that
several pharmaceutical firms do market vitamin C solutions for injections. Good luck in finding
a doctor who gives vitamin C injections. Despite the tremendous superiority of vitamin C over
antibiotics–it’s being ignored because of the monetary losses that would inflicted on the
pharmaceutical industry, professional journals and doctors themselves. Some physicians who
have been successful in vitamin C therapy have had their observations rejected by as many as 11
medical journals and told that it would be harmful to the journal to publish a useful treatment for
the common cold. So much for truth and human decency in alleviating suffering in the medical
profession. One way of knowing you’ve had too much vitamin C is if you get diarrhea. Dr
Cathcart has observed that diarrhea is the only side effect you’ll encounter from taking
megadoses of vitamin C. It is the body’s way of saying , “That’s enough vitamin C.
Don’t send anymore down.

VITAMIN C AND VIRUSES
The anti-viral and antibacterial effects of ascorbate have been observed in the
laboratory repeatedly since the 1930's. Biochemists Patricia and Carlton Schwerdt
recently examined a virus that produces cold symptoms and exposed it to vitamin C.
The virus was severely limited in reproduction. Similarly, Dr. Claus W. Jungeblut
demonstrated in 1935 that ascorbic acid inactivates the poliomyletis virus. Other
viruses have been shown to be inactivated by ascorbate in varying degrees :herpes,
vaccini , hoof and mouth, and rabies. Hepatitis viruses were 99% inactivated by
exposure for an hour to ascorbate concentrations that can be achieved in the blood
stream with large supplementation intake in studies performed by Dr. A. Murata and his
coworkers in 1975. This shows the folly of the recommended daily allowances (RDA)
set by the government. It requires at least 20 times the RDA to achieve viral and bacterial
destruction and maintain an effective concentration of vitamin C in the white blood cells
(leucocytes).

Dr. Murata’s work at Fukuoka Hospital confirms this finding. he noted that in
150 patients receiving blood transfusions 11 contacted hepatitis. By giving successive
patients at least 2 grams of ascorbate a day, he completely eliminated hepatitis cases
in the next 1,100 transfusions! It is a fact that this hospital routinely prescribes from
6-10 grams of vitamin C a day for all surgical and intensive-care patients–without any
danger of side effects. Dr. Stone has successfully treated fever blister, shingles, viral
pneumonia, chicken pox, mumps, etc.

As impressive as this evidence is-- there is always a suppression of it by the mainstream
medical establishment but I would like to point out that they are excuseless! Their misguided
fervor about testing ascorbate (when in fact it has been widely tested since the 1930 as a
virtually non toxic therapy) while hundreds of potent drugs run rampant with known side effects
are accepted by the average physician. If nothing else it makes for good medicine to use
ascorbate therapy. Dr. Linus Pauling reviewed the 13 largest studies of ascorbate in 1975 and it
clearly showed a 44% reduction in overall illness and a reduction of colds by 56%!
Dermatologists have found that when they administer 1 gram of vitamin C daily
as the sole treatment for prickley heat rash it is much better than drugs.

T.C. Hindson, M.D. of the British Military Hospital in Singapore, where the experiments took place,
reports that rashes were completely cleared in less than 2 weeks. Dr. Hindson explains
that when your sweat glands are overwhelmed, is in high heat, you quickly use up your
vitamin C reserve. This is dangerous cause vitamin C is a “hydrogen ion carrier for certain
enzyme systems which relate to the sweat glands,” thus crucial to normal sweat gland
operation. A rash is a deficiency symptom. Your body is telling you one portion of your
enzyme system is crippled and cannot do it’s job. When you take large doses of vitamin
C your exhausted system is reenergized and the rash rapidly recedes. Vitamin C is also
valuable in the treatment of badly burned patients.
In addition to bathing the injuries with a vitamin solution, the doctor administers the vitamin C internally in doses of 200-500 milligrams, four times daily. He also notes that in burn victims, vitamin C reduces the accumulation of fluid under the skin so that a graft may be done sooner. Being able to graft sooner lowers the risk of infection andshortens recovery time. Adding vitamin C to your diet can actually produce collagen that is
triple helical–three stranded –in form, a much stronger compound then ordinary collagen, which is two-stranded, or
less. Everyone needs vitamin C–especially those on prescription and over-the-counter drugs,
because all drugs including coffee cause a buildup of toxins within the body, which increases
your need for vitamin C.

SURGERY & VITAMIN C
Christopher’s Textbook of Surgery states that patients whose wounds break open
are almost always deficient in vitamin C. The book also stated that the requirements
of vitamin C rose to as much as 10 grams (10,000 milligrams) a day under the stress
of surgery or severe illness. What would bother any patient about this is that fact that
most surgeons do not read that simple fact and have neglected to treat patients with
vitamin C before and after surgery. Here is a real kicker-- It only takes one day on
intravenous glucose to totally deplete the human body of thiamine and zinc,
yet when do physicians add vitamins to their intravenous solutions. And zinc, which
is absolutely essential for healing is seldom given to those who need it
it most. A study recently done in Boston, and repeated in Atlanta, confirmed that
the majority of patients admitted to the intensive care unit were malnourished,
and were especially deficient in zinc. When the prognosis was compared,
those with severe deficiencies generally died, while those whose nutrition
was better got well. Still few physicians use nutrition to prevent disease or
speed recovery . . .”

NATURAL VERSES SYNTHETIC
Is your vitamin C supplement really vitamin C?
1. Probably not! Ninety-nine percent of all vitamin C supplements are ascorbic acid, calcium
ascorbate, magnesium ascorbate or potassium ascorbate. Despite marketing claims, these laboratory produced
molecules are not natural vitamin C — far from it. They are chemically synthesized
molecules manufactured in a test tube and often made from genetically modified corn sugar. These
synthetic molecules mimic only one of the numerous life-supporting molecules found in 100%
natural vitamin C. In the 1930s, Dr. Szent-Györgyi won the Nobel Prize in medicine for identifying
vitamin C and all its many health benefits. Although he successfully isolated the molecule ascorbic
acid in his research, his studies clearly demonstrated the vastly superior benefits of consuming foods
rich in vitamin C. For this reason, even though he discovered ascorbic acid, he did not recommend
its use! In fact, Dr. Szent-Györgyi affirmed over and over again that the best results occurred when
people consumed vitamin C in its natural food form.

Today, most of us are familiar with the many scientific studies demonstrating vitamin C’s important
health-enhancing and antioxidant benefits. What people may not know is that like Dr. Szent-
Györgyi’s research, much of this research is conducted using foods high in vitamin C and not
synthetic ascorbic acid supplements. This is a very significant distinction — scientists and
healthcare providers consistently emphasize the importance of obtaining all our nutrients from
whole foods such as Pure Radiance C. The proven health benefits we all associate with vitamin C
are only created by the intricate interaction of numerous supportive co-factors found only in
food, not in isolated, synthesized molecules. Test-tube vitamin C simply cannot re-create the
magnificent synergy of whole-food vitamin C.

Paper chromatographs of synthetic vitamin C compared to all-natural rose hip vitamin C
present different visual differences. The synthetic ascorbic acid looks pale and subdued,
almost an outline version of the richer, more lustrous natural vitamin C. Dr. David
Hawkins, Director of the Manhasset Mental Health Center says: “There’s life energy
in the natural rose hip vitamin C, and no life energy in the synthetic ascorbic acid.
Kirlian photography reveals a different picture. The natural vitamin C emanates a
much more radiant design than the ascorbic acid”.(Nutrition & Vitamin Therapy by
Michael Lesser, M.D., p.82-83) Vitamin C labels often deceptively tout “All-Natural Vitamin
C With Rose Hips” for a product almost entirely synthetic ascorbic acid with a pinch of
rose hip powder. Though misleading, this practice is legal, as the Food and Drug
Administration considers ascorbic to be vitamin C. You can use sodium ascorbate
form to avoid ascorbic acids acidity, but not if you’re on a low sodium diet. In such
as case, the calcium ascorbate is useful.

High potency vitamin C formulas are a combination of natural and synthetic. For
example, a 1000 mg. vitamin C tablet can be purely synthetic (industrial ascorbic acid)
or partially natural (ascorbic acid and rose hips or acerola cherries). This type of tablet
is usually labeled “ascorbic acid with rose hips.” It is not practical for manufacturers to
produce a single tablet containing 1000 mg. of vitamin C unless it is predominately
synthetic ascorbic acid. A 1000 mg. capsule of rose hips would be too large to swallow.
Acerola extract (prepared by drying the juice from crushed acerola cherries) is the most
compact natural form of vitamin C available, yet pure acerola extract are not available in
amounts greater than 50mg. Since 5,000 mg. of dried acerola are required to yield 1,000
mg. of vitamin C, one would have to swallow 20 of the 50 mg tablets to obtain 1,000 mg
of vitamin C. A while back I remember reading of a certain kind of  desert cactus
yielded a cup of  squeezed juice that contained 20 grams of vitamin C and the people who drank it
did not even have any body odor when they would sweat. Beats using antiperspirants!

Organic is another abused term by the food & vitamin manufacturers. The word
organic is a copywriters dream come true, since the unabridged dictionary lists at least
fifteen separate definitions of organic. That makes anything and everything organic in
some way or another. Actually there is only one definition that makes sense in relation
to vitamins: ORGANIC–obtained directly from animal or vegetable sources. Ascorbic
acid is synthetic and is missing at least 9 other minerals plus part of the bioflavonoid
complex. Vitamin C inside a tomato is organic and vastly superior to ascorbic acid
cooked up in a chemists lab synthesized from corn starch.

ASCORBIC ACID IS NOT VITAMIN C. ASCORBIC ACID IS ASCORBIC ACID,
WHICH IS A FRACTION OF THE BIOLOGICALLY UTILIZABLE VITAMIN C
COMPLEX.

There is a NATURAL ascorbic acid which is derived from citrus fruits, ascerola cherries, rose hips, green
peppers and other fruits and vegetables. However, most all of the ascorbic acid (vitamin C,
so-called) on the market is synthetically produced from corn sugar (glucose) and even though it
is synthetically manufactured, it is called natural and organic because corn sugar comes from
corn (unless synthetic) and corn is found in nature and of course, anything containing carbon is
organic. In turn, the terms natural and organic have been rendered meaningless.

Again, a fraction of a vitamin whether natural or synthetic at best is a drug and can only have a
drug effect in the body--not a physiological or curative benefit. The literature is abundant with
studies demonstrating that large or megadoses of ascorbic acid can and do create serious health
problems in the human biochemistry. Some problems reported include: Collagen disease,
rebound scurvy which is vitamin C deficiency disease, impaired mineral metabolism, imbalance
of other vitamins like vitamin A and B, formation of some types of kidney stones and diabetes
mellitus.

MISCELLANEOUS

NERVOUS SYSTEM: Vitamin C keeps your nerves on a even keel by insuring that you keep
making 2 amino acids–phenylalanine and tyrosine–which are essential for the smooth activity
of the central nervous system. Vitamin C also works to convert the amino acid tryptophan
into the neurotransmitter compound called serotonin.

TEETH & BONES
: You have heard that calcium is need for strong teeth and bones, right?
Then so is vitamin C which makes sure that calcium reaches the places that need it. The
power of detox is one part of the job and the other is elimination. Vitamin C makes sure
that the glands selectively remove materials from the blood, concentrate them and secrete
them from the body–particularly the thyroid and the adrenal cortex in which vitamin C
helps produce hormones for stress control as an added bonus.

CELLULAR INTEGRITY:
Vitamin C uses the enzymes proline and lysine to manufacture
collagen and maintain it’s elasticity. It plays a big part healing cuts, lesions, or more serious
topical or internal injuries..Vitamin C is like an army, and your body is like a castle it protects.

THE BIOFLAVONOIDS
In nature, vitamin C comes with vitamin P (first extracted from Paprika). They
are called the citrus bioflavonoid complex found in the rind and pulp of citrus fruits.
This is one of the nutritional disasters of the store bought fruit juices which are strained
of the life sustaining properties of the bioflavonoids. Oranges and lemons have 10 times
the bioflavonoids that are found in strained juice. Frozen orange juice is a poor source
of the vitamin P complex–because it gives an off-taste to the juice and the reason why
the amount of pulp squeezed is carefully controlled by the processors. The richest natural
sources are citrus fruits, apricots, cherries, grapes, peppers, tomatoes, papaya, broccoli,
and cantaloupe. The effectiveness of vitamin C is greatly enhanced by the bioflavonoids.
Vitamin P prolongs the effect of C and prevents the destruction of C by oxidation.
The bioflavonoids are water-soluble ; any excess will pass out of the urine. They are
non toxic and without apparent unwanted side effects. Studies have shown bioflavonoids
to be toxic to cancer cells.

The bioflavonoids protect the capillaries which are the first line of defense. They
are the “business centers” of our body. It is here where the food passes through the blood
stream and into the cells and tissues and the waste products are collected and eliminated
from the body. Talk about a wiring job! It’s been estimated that a 150 lb person could
wrap his capillaries around the equator 4 complete times. The capillary “pores” are the
feeder mouths which measure about 6 millimicrons across (4 millionths of an inch).
The smallest virus is about 7-8 millimicrons and when the pores become weakened
by lack of vitamin C–the walls break down and allow viruses and other foreign particles
to pass through, causing mayhem in the cells and tissues causing diseased conditions.

Diabetics can benefit profoundly from bioflavonoid therapy. Dr. R. Lowe treated diabetic
eye patients and all responded favorably. One diabetic man who had diabetes for 15 years
and had his vision returned to clear, normal eye condition
in just 6 weeks with Vitamin C and bioflavonoids. Ten months later he was examined
and found free from further damage. The frequency of capillary bleeding in hypertension,
which often ends in fatal outcome, deserves the full attention of the medical profession.
Bioflavonoids have been used in dozens of disorders and applications--nose bleed, skin
disorders, bursitis, diabetic retinitis, bleeding gums, heavy menstrual bleeding ,
hemorrhoids, asthma etc.

Dr. Carl Pfeiffer of the Brain Bio Center prescribes rutin (a bioflavonoid) for depressed patients
because in tests (EEG), the brain waves shown it to act as a sedative in 50mg doses each morning.
Dr. Thomas Dowd, former team physician for the Philadelphia Eagles football team, gave bioflavonoids
to the players. Using a regimen of three citrus-P capsules daily, the number of football players with large bruises after the game decreased from 40% to only 5%.   Dr. James R. West of Morrel Memorial Hospital, Lakeland, Florida, treated 21 patients with rheumatoid arthritis with 300 mg. of bioflavonoids daily from 2-
6 months. Improvement in pain, digestion, blood pressure, and action in joints was noticed in a
matter of weeks. Bursitis also responds to bioflavonoids. The use of  200mg. of bioflavonoids
three times daily for a case of bursitis will cause the  swelling and pain to diminished within 24 hours.
